A Witch’s Hex
One day I was teaching and all seemed just fine
I was helping some students at a quarter past nine
When one boy kept talking, he was quite out of hand
I took his noon recess, that's when it began.
"I wish I could give her a broom and a wart.
She's being a witch. She should look like the part."
Victor whispered this hex just under his breath
How was he to know what would happen next?
By 9:45 my nose started to grow
A big wart with a hair on it started to show
The kids started giggling, I felt my nose itch
I looked in the mirror - I saw a witch!
My fingers got twitchy and started to crack
They got twisted and gnarled and wrinkled and black
Long ugly fingernails grew from each one
My clothes all turned black, it wasn't much fun.
By 9:49 I started to sprout
Some slimy green seaweed that grew from my snout
This mustache grew longer and dropped past my chin
Oh what a pickle I found myself in!
By 9:51 my skin wrinkled a bit
I sat on a broom when I started to sit
My teeth were all crooked but sharp as some nails
My skin from my chin to my toes had fish scales.
When at last I stopped changing I started to talk
But out of my mouth came a frog with a hop
The students all snickered, they ought to bewares
"Be quiet!" I cackled - they sunk in their chairs.
My words had amazing control on each kid
Their lips were all glued, their words were all hid
Kayla started to wiggle, I told her to freeze
She froze like a statue from her head to her knees.
Ben tilted his chair. I glued the floor to his feet.
His pants, I thought gladly, should be glued to his seat.
Chris nudged his friend Zach. I gave my finger two twirls.
"You two are like sisters." They screamed. They were girls!
Josh T crawled under his desk just to hide.
He squeaked when I made him a mouse, then he cried.
Josh M sprang for the door but I spun a web quick
He turned to a cricket and got stuck - what a trick!
Siobhan was shaking like some little leaf
So I made her a bug and she curled up to sleep.
Under the table Samantha kicked Shawn
I made them both vanish, who knew where they'd gone.
Katie looked so frightened I thought I'd go easy
I gave her a fit where she couldn't stop sneezing
Just then I spied Jon who was crawling away
Zap - he was a rock. Oh what a day!
I made Kristi a fairy I trapped in a jar
Kyle grew a beard and Matt sat stuck in tar
Duncan grew seaweed from his chin to his knee
Jordan begged for mercy but I made him a flea
Matt, Kyle and Mary are usually quite nice
So I just colored their hair and froze them in ice.
Just then Ms. LaRosa strolled in with a frown
I made her a queen and gave her a crown!
Jessie looked quite nervous as I pointed at her
She changed into a cat and she started to purr
It was then I saw Victor, looked him straight in the eye
When over and over he wished in his mind:
"I take back my voodoo, erase my bad spell
I promise to be good just let my teacher be well."
My warts they all vanished, my broom disappeared
My nose shrunk 2 inches, my smile reappeared
I looked at the clock, it was a quarter past ten
The children were back to themselves once again.
The spells were all broken, that is all but one
Where's Victor? Not all of my magic was done
For the trouble he caused, on every day since
He had to be good, I'd make him a prince.
The Princess Caterpillar
Stuck to a leaf in the garden was an egg. There were hundreds of eggs. But one egg was off by itself and so stood out in the crowd.
Over time, a tiny caterpillar hatched from the egg. She was a pretty little bug. As she grew, her skin darkened into the most beautiful emerald green color. Near her head she had a lovely halo of white spots. Her tiny bright eyes sparkled with the colors of the rainbow. Because she had a crown of white spots, all the other insects called her the Princess Caterpillar.
The caterpillars that lived in the garden each went their own way. They munched the leaves and did not stop to talk to others.
The Princess Caterpillar also spent her days eating leaves. But instead of ignoring the other crawling creatures around her, the Princess Caterpillar spoke to them. She always told them stories, and always shared a smile. When she came upon a hurt caterpillar, she would gently comfort it with her soft feet and soft whispers.
One day the Princess caterpillar disappeared. The bus in the garden looked everywhere for her. Finally, they found her. The dark green color of the Princess glowed through the skin of a cocoon.
The caterpillars mourned their loss. No longer would they hear the lovely stories the Princess Caterpillar told. No longer would they feel the soft touch of her feet. no longer would they see the sparkles in her eyes.
Caterpillars came from all over the garden to visit the Princess’s cocoon. She was still and lifeless insider her silky coffin. After a while, her emerald color faded to a dull brown.
All of the caterpillars of the garden knew that they would some day be in a cocoon too. What they did not know was that the cocoon, which they thought was their end, brought them each new life.
One day, in the warmth of the September sun, the Princess Caterpillar’s cocoon split open. She wiggled and pulled her way out of her broken shell. She crawled out onto the branch and spread her new wings. No longer was she a dark green caterpillar. Now she was a silky black butterfly with wings of yellow, white and blue. A halo of white spots crowned her head.
Whe she had rested a while, she opened her wings and flapped them. Her eyes sparkled with the colors of the rainbow. happy with her new world, the Princess Caterpillar flew up into the sky. Away she flew, now a Princess Butterfly.
